Maryland was founded here, so no visit to St. Mary’s County is complete without a visit to Historic St. Mary’s City, a living history museum that takes visitors back in time to the first Roman Catholic settlement in the new world, and St. Clement’s Island, Maryland’s first capital. Or, get a wide view of the Potomac River at the Piney Point Lighthouse at the far southern tip of the county. You can also tour Sotterley Plantation to learn more about the county’s Civil War history and the families who called the plantation home. Want something faster? Learn about the county’s aviation history at the Patuxent River Naval Air Museum. Looking for even more speed? Perhaps the fast cars at the Maryland International Raceway will get your blood pumping.
